Sitka is sheltered island, just off the
Pacific coast with a Russian Heritage and originally the capital of
Alaska. While an island, it seems very active and thriving without a
major cruise ship presence.
Arriving Monday afternoon we explored
the nearby National Historical Park before dinner and a beer harbor
front. We're staying at the Fly Inn Fish Inn B&B on active
commercial fishing harbor. Water front room with views of the fishing
boats and seaplanes coming and going.
Tuesday morning breakfast at the B&B
was by far the best breakfast of the trip (Irish Sunrise for Jeff,
Homestyle Biscuit and Gravy topped with eggs for Debby). Trekked out
to the Alaska Raptor center where injured eagles and similar birds
are cared for and re-released if possible.
Being a little pooped we took a down
day, with lunch at the quaint and comfortable Larkspure Cafe, a haircut for Debby,
reading at a coffee shop, and laundry. We also bought two large “If
it fits, It ships” boxes from the post office and shipped a bunch of
stuff home. Tired of dragging too much stuff all over Alaska.
Next, airport shuttle at 4:30am (ugh!)
to catch a jet to Anchorage.
