On Saturday we listened to another
ranger talk, caught a shuttle bus to the old graveyard and a
waterfall trail, and off to the ferry dock.Quite a walk.
The bright sunshine was the best of the entire trip!
In the afternoon, we took a commercial
fast ferry about 14 miles down to Haines (350 miles by road!)
Haines has a little more population
than Skagway, but is different in that while Skagway gets about 20
cruise ships a week, Haines might get 20 ships a season.
We are staying at the Guardhouse B&B,
part of the historic Fort Seeward military base. The based was
established way back when we had some skirmishes with the Canadians.
Something like where the border was supposed to be. Had a fine dinner
at the nearby Fireweed Restaurant. Fireweed is a plant who's flower
turns to “cotton” this time of year. We saw some and as the
saying goes, “When the fireweed turns to cotton, summer is soon
forgotten”
